What is Body Psychotherapy?
Body Psychotherapy developed from the work of Wilhelm Reich who was part of the circle of Psychiatrists surrounding Sigmund Freud in the early years of Psychoanalysis. His challenging views about the affect of social conditioning and the repression of sexuality on the individual was revolutionary at the time.
Reich was the first to realize that emotional problems could be approached effectively through understanding and working with people on a physical level- as a whole organism. He brought to western consciousness the recognition of the human energetic system and developed bodywork techniques to release blocked energy and emotions. Much of Reich's scientific understanding, for instance his theory of how memory is stored in the body, is now being confirmed by neurological research and in the field of NeuroPsychology.
His work has evolved, carried on by many individuals; Ola Raknes, Federico Navarro, John Pierrakos, Alexander Lowen, Ida Rolf, Charles Kelly, Jack Rosenburg, Ron Kurtz, Gerda Boyesen and David Boadella, to name just a few. Through their work some of the schools which represent Body Psychotherapy are; Bioenergetics, Biodynamic psychotherapy, Radix, Core Process Psychotherapy, and the Hakomi Method.....
Contemporary Body Psychotherapy is considered a branch of Humanistic Psychotherapy and recognizes the importance of the relationship between therapist and client. It is the trust and emotional connection between therapist and client which makes it possible to explore and change relationship patterns, and to work with trauma in a safe and effective way. Most Body Psychotherapists use breathing and body awareness exercises, work with regression, and may include bodywork.
